Paddle Steamer Waverley Announces First Visit to English Riviera Since the 1980s

Historic Paddle Steamer Waverley Returns to South Cornwall and South Devon

Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, is set to return to South Cornwall and South Devon this summer, with Torquay newly added as a calling point. From Thursday, August 28th to Monday, September 1st, the historic steamship will offer a series of cruises, with stops in Penzance, Falmouth, Fowey, Plymouth, and Dartmouth, welcoming passengers aboard for an unforgettable maritime experience.

Captain Dominic McCall, Waverley’s Master, expressed his excitement about the return: “In 2024, Waverley received an incredible reception in the South West, with tickets selling out as locals and visitors eagerly boarded. Sailing into the picturesque Fowey harbour was a highlight, but witnessing Waverley meet Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle on the River Dart, with both paddlers steaming side by side and their whistles sounding, was truly unforgettable. This year, we are thrilled to expand our itinerary by adding Torquay, enhancing the unique experiences Waverley offers.”

Carolyn Custerson, CEO of the English Riviera BID Company, shared her enthusiasm: “We are delighted that the iconic Paddle Steamer Waverley will be returning to the English Riviera this summer and berthing in Torquay for the first time in decades. This is fantastic news for our local tourism industry, giving both visitors and residents a rare opportunity to enjoy a journey aboard the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer. We look forward to welcoming Waverley and her passengers to the English Riviera.”

Waverley will call at Torquay at 12:30 pm on Saturday, August 30th, offering an afternoon cruise along the scenic South Devon coast, passing Dawlish and Teignmouth. Later, at 3:45 pm, she will set sail for Dartmouth to meet Kingswear Castle and cruise up the River Dart as part of the Dartmouth Royal Regatta celebrations. On Monday, September 1st, Waverley will depart Torquay at 12:15 pm, heading for Weymouth, treating passengers to spectacular views of Lyme Bay, Portland Bill, Durdle Door, and Lulworth Cove along the way.

Aboard Waverley, passengers can immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of a real steamship. They can listen to the telegraph ring, visit the Engine Room to witness the massive paddles turning, and enjoy full catering facilities, including snacks, afternoon tea, hot meals in the Dining Saloon, and refreshments in the period lounges. The onboard Souvenir Shop also offers exclusive gifts and mementos to commemorate the experience aboard this iconic vessel.

Currently undergoing her annual survey, repair works, and a full repaint in dry dock, Waverley has seen over £1 million invested in her maintenance this winter to ensure her continued operation. Her 2025 sailing season begins next month, with visits planned to over 70 ports and piers across the UK.

Tickets for all sailings are available at waverleyexcursions.co.uk or by calling the booking office on 0141 243 2224.
